Nothing like sailing the Snake Bank RegattaThe Snake Bank Regatta, run annually by the Marsden Yacht & Boat Club, is a no holds barred race for any person of any age with any craft powered by a paddle or hand, entirely man or wind powered.
The challenge is to get around the 4km course and be the first or the fastest in your division. For those who want to relax a little more there is also a beginner/junior course which runs approximately 1.5km. Weather and wind permitting organisers hope to showcase water sport at its very best with a variety of craft embarking on a race around the famous Bank, the scene of many spectacles, and an iconic piece of sand and shell that appears to have not changed since the beginning of time itself. The race could be a blaze of glory if winds are strong, or a steely test of skill and patience should lighter winds prevail. The major prize is an Apple Watch Series 4, but there is a long list of prizes for best (craziest) fancy dress, most original craft and heaps of others. “The entries along with the prizes are getting bigger and better each year,” says club commodore Alan Allcock. In the spirit of a true regatta day there will be good food, refreshments and live entertainment from 2pm which will also allow competitors and spectators to enjoy the spectacle from the decks of Marsden Yacht & Boat Club on a hopefully balmy Northland summers day.
