Celebrating the volunteersNational Volunteer Week is all about recognising and celebrating the amazing work by people around the country who donate their time to help their communities.
Volunteering Northland are thanking the many volunteers who help keep communities alive and functioning across the region during National Volunteer Week, June 16-22. The organization works with more than 200 non profit organisations in Northland and currently has more than 200 roles available. “This year the theme is ‘weaving people together’ and this is something volunteering does well,” says Volunteering Northland manager Bart van der Meer. “We also want to celebrate and acknowledge the work people do. “Kaipara district and Mangawhai is privileged to have a passionate local community of volunteers. Volunteers are the unsung heroes and without them some of the region's community services would not be possible. This includes libraries and museums, environment and emergency services, youth and community services, events and community centres.” Emergency services is another vital area that relies heavily on volunteers. “More volunteers means we can reduce the workload for all volunteers, and still keep our community safe,” says Fire and Emergency Muriwhenua area manager Wipari Henwood. “Every person who steps forward can make a difference.” Volunteering Northland also stresses the benefits of volunteering to the volunteers. Research by leading universities, including the London School of Economics and Harvard, reveals that by giving your time and help to a worthy cause you will receive multiple benefits including feeling happier and being healthier. The added benefits of volunteering are meeting new friends, connecting with your community, enhancing your CV, combating loneliness and being active. “There is a place for everyone and many people need to be thanked," says Bart van der Meer.
