Regatta for anything that floatsAnnual charity fundraiser, the Newey Transport Snake Bank Regatta, is about to hit the water. Organised by the Marsden Yacht & Boat Club the February 15 event comprises a paddle race in the morning open to anything that can be paddled (paddle board, kayak, surf board, surf canoe, raft) followed in the afternoon by a sail race open to anything that can be sailed – from kiteboards, centreboard yachts, trailer yachts and keelers. The emphasis is on having fun, the event is open to all ages, and there are fabulous prizes – many distributed as spot prizes drawn on the day. In the spirit of fun, the winner in each category or class is not necessarily the first craft to cross the line but rather the one that is nearest to their nominated time to complete the course. Entry fee per craft is $25 or $5 if you are under 18 years. The paddle race commences at 11.30am and the sailing race at 1pm followed by prizegiving at 4pm. All entries go into a draw for a Garmin Fitness Tracker watch. Entry fees from competitors in the event will this year be distributed to Coastguard, St John, Surf Lifesaving Ruakaka and the Marsden Yacht & Boat Club’s own youth sailing program. Hot food is available all day, the cash bar opens at 11am and closes 7pm with live music from 2pm. Last year’s regatta saw 110 competitors and several hundred spectators enjoy the MYBC club facilities and entertainment on the day. ¢ For more details see marsdenyachtclub.co.nz |
