One way Wood Street trial to end

thumbnail 03 MF-Woodstupdate copy-681A one-way system experiment in one of Mangawhai’s busiest areas has come to an end with the collated feedback from the trial to be used as a guide for a future design.

Wood Street at Mangawhai Heads shopping area will return to the regular two-way system from February 11, signalling the end of the eight week trial period, Kaipara District Council (KDC) community and recreation advisor Gail Fotheringham says.

“This was the agreement made to the community who provided input in to the design of the roading, pedestrian and parking measures, to cope with the influx of visitors over the summer peak time period,” she says.

“Throughout the trial, feedback has been gathered from business operators, residents and visitors who have all had something valuable to say.”

Following two brainstorming sessions last year with nearby residents and Wood Street businesses focusing on the shopping centres Christmas traffic chaos, and an ‘open house session’ to share the tactical trial plans and allow for further community consultation, a one-way system was trialled from December 16.

Traffic entered from Molesworth Drive and exited either along Findlay or North Street, with Fagan Place a left hand turn only. Parking was also adjusted with additional spaces allocated behind the Medical Centre.

Fotheringham wants to encourage people to share their ideas and experiences of the trial via the online survey which remains live on KDC Mangawhai Community Planning website until February 23, or through filling in a survey form still available in a number of Wood Street outlets and at KDC’s office at The Hub, Mangawhai Village.

“Once we have collated all the responses we will share the findings via two community open sessions in March,” Fotheringham says. “This process will, in turn, inform the actions to be taken on a more permanent basis.”

A spokesperson for the Mangawhai Business Association says the organisation is pleased the trial went ahead and want to encourage everyone to give their feedback.

“We feel the council has been receptive to the trial and its outcomes, and very accommodating with the work that needed to be done to get it off the ground.”
