Fundraiser to help ease the bluesBY JULIA WADE A night of blues featuring a Mangawhai songstress is soon to hit the floorboards of a historic venue with a foot-stomping wild-ride of a fundraiser. Musical Mangawhai presents Waiheke Island’s ‘freight-train acoustic blues folk-rock duo’, Mojo Risers, along with local folk-blues singer Kiri Eriwata and London bluesman Mark 'Fatt Max' Hill. Proceeds from the February 22 show will go towards refurbishing the venue, Hakaru Hall, and to support social service organisation Te Whai Community Trust. Te Whai projects manager, Eriwata is excited to once again play with the Mojo Risers, aka Aaron Carpenter (guitar/harp/vocals) and Neal Ghoshal (guitar) who have been entertaining Waiheke Islanders for over 20 years. She says when they jam ‘it’s a bit like jumping on a freight train for a wild ride!’ “Bringing them to Mangawhai means I get to showcase my blues-folk style that I rarely get to share. Aaron likes to improvise the songs on guitar with his growling blues voice and harmonica, Neal ties it all together with his acoustic lead guitar and I mix between snare, percussion and voice,” she says. “I’m also really looking forward to hearing Fatt Max and his New Orleans style of playing blues. He will be making a very special cigar box guitar that will be raffled or auctioned off on the night.” Involved in music for many years, Eriwata works closely with songwriters and vocalists as a performance consultant, vocal teacher, co-writer and music industry mentor, including assisting student songwriters at University of Auckland’s School of Music since 2011. A talented musician in her own right, she also recorded her own album 'Muse and Memorabilia', released in 2016 to rave reviews. With Mojo Risers taking inspiration from and covering well-known artists such as Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Jethro Tull, Tony Joe White, Neil Young and JJ Cale, mixed with ‘Fatt Max’ blues and Eriwata’s own soulful blues style, the event is set to be a ‘foot-stomping showdown’. ¢ Mojo Risers feat.
