Art and artists make for a successful event

On the Saturday and Sunday of Auckland Anniversary weekend, the One Tree Point Combined Arts Group hosted their fourth annual One Tree Point Combined Arts Exhibition in the huge marquee at Marsden Cove and under a broad smile from the weather Gods.

Fine weather and good crowds made the event another success with the public taking advantage of the sensible prices for the exceptional artwork on display, which included 15 different variations of art and crafts.

One of the main points of interest with the exhibition was that all artists on site must be demonstrating their particular skill over the two days and explaining to the public what they aim to achieve and why. Though art in most forms is very much subjective, this provided considerably more interest to the viewing.

The organising committee spend quite some time assisting emerging artists to take the plunge and display their work in public, sometimes for the first time, and it is just great to see a nervous artist bloom over the exhibition. Artists pay a very reasonable fee for their display booth and the committee take no commission on sales.

Apart from the high quality of art, the public were spoilt for choice with the onsite live music, coffee, food and natural fruit ice cream which could be consumed in the relaxing shade of the gazebos next to the marina.

“The feedback from exhibitors and public alike is always so positive which gives the impetus to do it all again next year,” says chairman Colin Coutts. “The event is hosted and put together by the best group of 35 volunteers imaginable. Without these people there would be no exhibition.”

As a development that has arisen from the ongoing annual OTP Combined Arts Exhibition, the soon-to-be-opened art centre that is situated close to Ruakaka Shopping Centre will be the home of art for Bream Bay. The building is in an idyllic situation and will be primarily used for work space, tutorials, and a meeting place for art orientated people in Bream Bay. Although the building is not huge it will easily cater for all the various genres over allotted days of the month including, painters, poets, potters and almost everything in between. This body will be known as Bream Bay Combined Arts Group and will be the umbrella under which the One Tree Point Combined Arts Exhibition will be run.
