Changing tide at Sail Rock

Sail Rock Margaret Fish-204After 13 years it’s time for a change says Margaret Fish, owner of iconic Mangawhai eatery Sail Rock Cafe & Restaurant.

Currently taking her annual winter break, Margaret has listed the popular eatery for tender with Bayleys Real Estate.

“Even with its reputation and high profile the business now needs someone to take it to the next level,” says Margaret.

Whatever that level may be will depend on the flair and ability of an entrepreneur with new ideas and a new enthusiasm for a business that has stood the test of time for 25 years.

Originally built by local couple Box Milestone and Gail McConachy, Sail Rock has employed locals and occupied the same spot at the Mangawhai Heads shopping centre since the early 1990s.

The local institution – despite refits, updates and alterations – has always retained a nautical theme and menu. The Lonely Planet travel guide has, for many years, made mention of Sail Rock’s signature salt-and-pepper squid.

Sail Rock Cafe has been regularly featured in Cuisine Wine Country Annual Best Restaurants, and is well known for its many evenings featuring renowned musicians and performers such as comedian Gary McCormack, Hammond Gamble, Paul Ubana Jones and Graham Brazier.

Seating for up to 140 guests make the sunny main street location perfect for hosting events, and private functions.

A grand piano has always sat waiting for anyone who wanted to tickle the ivories and entertain whoever might be enjoying an afternoon or early evening tipple.

A business like this cannot survive without community support, and in turn Sail Rock has also supported the community on many occasions over the years offering a place for fundraisers, making a number of donations to worthy causes and providing sponsorship for a number of events.

Margaret still intends to be involved with tourism and hospitality as she has a long association involved with training younger entrants to the industry.

“Training is all-important in maintaining quality of food and the variety that your menu must provide,” she says.

Bayley’s Real Estate representatives Sandy Allen and Charlotte Wilson are thrilled to be handling the sale process.

“This is an outstanding opportunity to purchase – in the ultimate location with a rapidly-growing community – an extremely successful, iconic New Zealand cafe, bar and restaurant,” says Sandy.

The sale will be by tender so prospective buyers are invited to put their own value on an iconic piece of real estate – but Sail Rock Cafe and Restaurant is much more than just a piece of real estate.
